Buttsbury Junior School, Billericay
I am Assistant Headteacher at Buttsbury Junior School in Billericay, where I am also Literacy Subject Leader and Year Group leader. My role has been to drive school improvements and initiatives in Literacy.
Key areas I am passionate about have included the implementation of the school library and promoting opportunities for writing across the curriculum. Through my role I was also responsible for the design of the new curriculum for Literacy in light of the new National Curriculum, which has been positively received. The new schemes of work have included schemes for reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. I have supported other leaders in school to develop the teaching of literacy in classes, focusing on how more able pupils are appropriately challenged in mixed ability environments. I have also worked with other leaders to improve the teaching sequence in literacy. As part of my role, I have led CPD training for teaching and non-teaching colleagues based on reading, writing and grammar, punctuation and spelling.
As literacy subject leader, I was involved in the Creative Partnerships project and looked into sustainable projects for schools. I was also involved in the successful application process for the ArtsMark Gold award.
I have also mentored many Initial Teacher Training trainees, both as a class based mentor and, more recently, as lead mentor. I enjoy the challenge of supporting new trainees to develop their classroom practices. I have also mentored a Newly Qualified Teacher.
Over the years, I have worked collaboratively with other schools in literacy based projects, and the Creative Partnerships project work. This has included working with both Key Stage 1 and 3 colleagues in moderation of writing specifically.
