Jonathan Sands

Head of Music

Shenfield High School

About Me

For the last five years I have been at Shenfield High School where the music department has grown to become one of the leading departments in the area. I have established an extra-curricular programme of sixteen music clubs that facilitates progress and development for all students. We offer five different courses at KS4 & 5 including GCSE, A Level, BTEC Music Technology and BTEC Music Performance. I have led the department to some very strong results achieving 100% A*-B in 2015.

In my role as Lead Subject Mentor for Billericay Educational Consortium SCITT, I am required to lead and support a group of subject mentors in addition to running a weekly training session on all aspects of classroom music teaching for trainees.

I currently lead the Music Network for Billericay Teaching School Alliance where Heads of Department, teachers and technicians are able to attend to discuss key issues and developments in the subject. Most recently I led a session on the new specifications for GCSE & A level.

I have delivered whole school INSET on ‘Assessment without Levels to create Accurate Data’. This has led to me working with our English, Science, Drama and Citizenship departments to create forms of assessment that both facilitate and encourage student progress.

I have also musically directed a number of amateur musicals at Brentwood Theatre. I am a brass specialist and currently the Bandmaster for The Salvation Army in Basildon.
