Hannah Stechman

Inclusion Manager

Brightside Primary School, Billericay

About Me

I am a fully trained teacher of both the New Zealand and UK curricula with experience in Reception to Year 6. As Inclusion Manager I lead a whole-school approach to improving achievement for all vulnerable groups. This includes the co-ordination of provision for students with Special Educational Needs and/or Disability (SEND), English as an Additional Language (EAL), Gifted and Talented (G&T) and those eligible for Pupil Premium funding. It is my belief that educational improvement is most effective when schools themselves critically evaluate their own performance and develop a response which suits their individual requirements. Within my current setting, integrating SEND provision into existing systems and aligning SEND development with whole-school agendas has been an effective way to meet the learning and additional needs of all students. My role involves staff development through coaching, one to one support and training. This has focused on meeting a range of needs as part of classroom teaching as well as the effective deployment of capable and motivated support staff. The use of research-informed approaches has underpinned the selection of strategies to address barriers to learning. Careful tracking, analyses and evaluation of the impact of interventions has been key to effective decision making and allocation of resources. I have recent experience of mentoring a newly appointed SENCo, which involved supporting them to develop an inclusive ethos and rigorous monitoring processes. Meeting the statutory requirements relating to SEND, and seeking to continuously improve provision, has often necessitated managing the process of change. Taking an Action Research approach to implementing new initiatives has impacted positively upon working practices in my school and is an approach that can be utilised successfully in any educational setting.
