Head of Faculty - MFL

The Billericay School, Billericay

About Me

I have now been head of the MFL Faculty at the Billericay School for four years, having moved here from another local school. Over this period I have developed the MFL department into a motivated and effective team in which staff feel supported and inspired to introduce new initiatives.  Teaching in the department is excellent, assessment approaches rigorous and intervention strategies effective. As a result we have a strong track record of improving results and are increasingly provide support for colleagues from other schools. Lessons are clearly structured with a good variety of challenging and motivating activities, and the approach to assessment is rigorous. Data analysis is thorough, grade predictions are generally highly accurate, and intervention is carefully planned. As a result, we have a strong track record of improving results year on year. Last year GCSE A*-C was over 80% for French and German and A Level A-C 100% for both languages. During the most recent Ofsted inspection I was told by the head teacher that 50% of the lessons observed in MFL were judged to be outstanding.

With a strong interest in training and continued professional development, I have always been keen to facilitate interschool partnerships and provide extensive support to colleagues from other schools on an informal basis, sharing advice and resources. On behalf of Billericay TSA, I lead the Secondary Subject Networks for MFL, and am also the Lead Subject Mentor for MFL within the Billericay Educational Consortium School Direct. I have also delivered flexible and school wide training on topics such as problem solving, reading strategies,  literacy and marking and assessment, as well as providing some NQT training for Billericay TSA. I have also delivered sessions to a wider audience, for example I presented on my research lesson project at the National College and on the introduction of Chinese to the Essex China Conference.

I see my role as enabling other teachers to be the best they can be.
