Given the strong sense of working together and sharing of good practice across schools, during the early 1990s, 15 schools in Billericay and the surrounding areas of Downham and Stock entered into a partnership. Schools involved were The Billericay School, Brightside Primary, Buttsbury Infant, Buttsbury Junior, Downham C of E Primary, Mayflower High, Quilters Infant, Quilters Junior, Ramsden Hall, South Green Infant, South Green Junior, St. Peter’s Catholic Primary, Stock C of E Primary, Sunnymede Infant and Sunnymede Junior schools. In recognition of this in the early 2000s, this group was awarded funding from National College to become a networked learning community under the name of the Billericay Educational Consortium (BEC). As the collaboration developed, it went from strength to strength and eight years ago, in order to secure the future of collaborative working, a steering group was formed consisting of a representative of each of the 15 schools to explore the possibility of BEC becoming a Trust. On 1st September 2009, the Billericay Community Trust (BCT) was formed comprising the 15 BEC schools and Anglia Ruskin University. BCTs vision focussed on excellence in learning from 0-80, enhancing of collaboration between providers, efficient use of resources and promotion of community cohesion. BCT schools are local authority maintained and are supported by a charitable foundation. These schools are able to work with a range of partners including other schools, universities, businesses to enhance educational attainment for all pupils across Billericay with an integral part of this work being to develop high quality primary and secondary teachers from trainees through to senior leaders.
Through working with partners within and beyond the Trust including Consortium for School Improvement (CSI), Billericay School Direct and Mid Essex ITT, the partnership has gone from strength to strength.
Building on its strong foundations, BCT were then awarded Teaching School Alliance (TSA) status in March 2012 with St Peter’s Catholic Primary becoming our lead Teaching School. TSA status has enabled the Trust to work beyond the boundaries of our partnerships and indeed South East Essex enabling us to work with many schools and organisations to bring about change and impact significantly on the School Improvement agenda.
