Getting our students to engage in writing, write well and secure high marks (Secondary)
Why this course?
In every subject, students need to write extended answers and essays. It can be challenging getting students started, and encouraging them to write enough. This session offers practical strategies in helping students to plan and structure their answers.
Who is this course for?
It is aimed at teachers from KS3 – KS5 who feel they need to gain confidence or more expertise in teaching writing strategies. They may not necessarily consider themselves “English specialists” or they could be teachers who are quite confident with teaching students how to write, but wish to learn more. The session has a whole school focus and will include strategies for a variety of subjects: PE, Science, Geography etc. It may also be instructive for leaders who are responsible for delivering literacy across the curriculum.
Delegates will leave with practical strategies to help students plan and structure their writing, as well as develop subject specific vocabulary and close the vocabulary gap.
The following will be explored during the session:
- What are the barriers to students’ writing?
- How can we help students structure their writing?
- How do we use high quality models effectively?
- How can we “warm up the words” for writing and help close the vocabulary gap?
- How can we include creative and challenging writing activities in our schemes of work?
Who are the Trainers?
The course is delivered by Janet Bradley, Lead Practitioner in English and Specialist Leader of Education. As an experienced English teacher with responsibility for whole school literacy, Janet has designed the course for colleagues across the school who are responsible for teaching extended writing in their subjects.
